Like other towns in the Bitterroot Valley Montana, Victor has been renamed. Originally called Garfield after President James Garfield, the town was later renamed after Chief Victor of the Salish Indian Tribe. A. Sterne Blake and his wife, a Shoshone Indian, were among the original founders in the 1860´s. Victor was a part of Missoula County at the time and Blake was the first elected state legislator from Missoula County.
