Overview of Corvallis History

Corvallis Mountains - Corvallis Real EstateCorvallis Montana was originally called the Sunflower City and was later named Chaffinville. Located about 6 miles north of Hamilton of the East Side Highway Corvallis is home of one of the oldest communities in the state and was founded in 1866 by settlers from Kentucky and Missouri. Let by Ellijah Chaffin, Slack, Mitchell, Strange, Goff and others, moved to the Bitterroot Valley by wagon train from Oregon. Ellijah Chaffin and his wife were the first to arrive in Corvallis. They went to Oregon after one winter to see if they liked it better there only to return to the Bitterroot Valley.

Farming was the main source of income with farmers growing a variety of crops including, potatoes, wheat, fruit trees, sugar beets, berries and vegetables. One of the remaining apple orchards is the Swanson Orchards which started in 1908 and is now the largest orchard in the Bitterroot Valley.

A favorite downtown café "The Memories Café." Used to be the first Protestant chapel in the valley and was established in 1881 by Rev. William D. Lear. It is now that great café perfect for breakfast and is decorated with old farming pictures, farm implements and events of the people who live in and around Corvallis Montana.
